Namgail Tsemo

Namgail Tsemo is Situated near the Leh market on Top of the mountain.It is a Buddhist monastery or gompa that is very well-known among adventure enthusiasts and passionate travelers. It is perched on top of a mountain behind Leh Palace and you can enjoy breathtaking sights of the Indus River and Zanskar Range from here. King Tashi Namgyal founded it in 1430 and hence the monastery is known after his name. The gompa stands out not only due to the many amazing frescoes and age-old manuscripts inside it, but also because it houses a stunning three-storey high statue Maitreya Buddha. The statue is made of gold and a wonderful sight for sure.

 

Leh Palace

Leh palace also referred as the “Lhachan Palkha” is a yester year royal palace. The palace was built in the 17th century and had nine storeys , but it is now dilapidated and deserted. It was the home of the royal family until they were exiled to Stok in the 1830s. Above the palace, at the top of the Namgyal hill, is the Victory Tower, built to commemorate Ladakh’s victory over the Balti Kashmir armies in the early 16th century. This palace built for King Singge Namgyal, now houses the Ladakhi branch of the Indian Government’s archaeological conservation organization.

 

Shanti Stupa

The Shanti Stupa was built by a Japanese order and was opened by the Dalai Lama in 1985. From the shanti stupa , can see all the view of Leh area and Stok kangri and khardong la . The stupa is located at a distance of 3 km from the market.

 

Sangkar Monastry

Sankar Monastery, is a Buddhist monastery within an easy half-hour walk from Leh. It is a daughter-establishment of Spituk Monastery and the residence of the Abbot of Spituk, the Venerable Kushok Bakula, who is the senior incarnate lama of Ladakh due to his ancient lineage and personal authority. The gompa belongs to the Gelukpa order and has an impressive impression of the Buddhist deity Avalokiteshwara Padmahari or Chenresig, with 1,000 arms and an equal number of heads.There are 60 lamas lived.
